The Saklikent National Park
The Saklikent Canyon in Saklikent National Park is 18 km long, 300 meters deep and is steep and narrow. The Saklikent Canyon is longer by 4 km each than the Ihlara Valley in Cappadocia and the Koprulu Canyon in Turkey. After Verdon in France and Vikos in Greece, it is considered to be the third-longest canyon in Europe. The Saklikent Gorge also known as “Hidden Valley” or The Lost City. This valley with a stream flowing through the icy waters. Streams of water are really cold. It may take longer to get used to the cold water. This cold water, spring water of the Bey Mountains within the terms of the areas that are eminently valuable is water.
Canyons are natural formations in every continent, all over the world. Those rich in flora and fauna, with steep slopes of sharp rock and roaring rivers in their depths, are truly astounding to observe.
The Saklikent Canyon is walkable after April when most of the snow from the Taurus Mountains has melted and passed through the gorge on its way to the Xanthos River. Summer is the best time to visit as the canyon is deliciously cool and shady with cold water.
The water at the bottom is cold even in summer, because sunlight hardly penetrates, and it is possible to walk through the water, and sometimes on suspended wooden platforms in Saklikent National Park. It is among the canyons that attract the most attention of tourists in Turkey. Approximately 200 – 300 thousand people visit the canyon every year. There are sixteen caves from Roman times, and it was used for shelter 2000-3000 years ago. Saklikent Canyon has steep slopes.
The Letoon Historical Landmark
Letoon was the sacred cult center of Lycia, its most important sanctuary, and was dedicated to the three national deities of Lycia - Leto and her twin children Apollo and Artemis. Leto was also worshiped as a family deity and as the guardian of the tomb.
Letoon lies less than 10 km to the south of Xanthos on a fertile plain. Xanthos and Letoon are often seen as a "double-site" since the two were closely linked and Letoon was administered by Xanthos. Xanthos-Letoon is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Turkey. For this reason, it has been registered in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. Letoon has been under excavation since the 1950s and since 1962 by the French Archaeological Mission, in conjunction with the excavations being carried out at Xanthos. Excavation goes on today - the team has done some excellent work and in recent years has begun to restore the Temple of Leto.
Letoon is a romantic site and many of the monuments arise from standing water which provides lush vegetation. Terrapins and frogs are usually seen. Unfortunately, though, the high water table hinders excavation.
To reach Letoon, you turn west one km beyond the road from Kinik to Fethiye and continue 5 km. It's not far from Patara and a day trip from Kalkan, Kas or Fethiye to Letoon or Xanthos could easily be combined with a trip to the beach and/or ruins there.
Patara Antik Kenti Historical Landmark
At the site of a prominent ancient city, Patara Antik Kenti preserves the crumbling remains of a parliament building, cultural facilities, and public baths. Also known as the birthplace of St. Nicholas, this city is responsible for the legend of Santa Claus. The 7th-century Arab raids brought devastation and transformed the metropolis into a village that eventually became a naval base. As you walk among its remains, look for tombs, pillars, a well-preserved theater, and monuments, such as one of the oldest lighthouses in the world. The area is also known for sheltering a vast number of birds. Buses pass here throughout the day.
